A fortified town On the tracks of Vauban

The history of our territory is marked by the typical architecture of marquis de Vauban, who is generally considered the greatest engineer of his time. His principles for fortifications were widely used for nearly 100 years, while aspects of his offensive tactics remained in use until the mid-twentieth century.

Gravelines is surrounded by a perfect star-shaped fortification. Walk along the remparts, vaults and bastions, and enjoy the natural environment.

Getting there

In the footsteps of VAUBAN

Located at the mouth of the River Aa, in an exceptional natural setting, the star-shaped fortress of Gravelines is a unique place where fresh and salt water meet.

Historic stonework and lush vegetation come together here, making it a delightful place for everyone to explore. Charming public gardens have been created within the bastions or around former military buildings, while vegetable gardens line the ramparts along the chemin de ronde. The Vauban Nature area and a bird reserve occupy the former outer fortifications… The small fortified town of Gravelines truly embraces nature!

This star-shaped fortress has preserved its original bastioned walls, reinforced by ravelins and counterguards. The fortifications, including the magnificent Porte aux Boules, are listed as Historic Monuments and have been carefully restored since the 1980s.

Explore Gravelines on foot, by boat or by bike!
