A Land of Brewers

Beer, a Tradition!

Several microbreweries are keeping a centuries-old tradition alive.

Do you like your beer blonde, amber or perhaps a little more exotic? Here, beer is a tradition! And as a true seafaring town, Dunkirk is home to countless bars where you can enjoy some of the best beers in northern France, and much more besides. Dunkirk is also home to a thriving microbrewery scene, with a variety of beers that might even make our Belgian neighbours blush! So, if you’re looking to quench your thirst, follow the guide!

A little history

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Dunkirk area was home to dozens of breweries. Beer was often the only “hygienic” drink available… So everyone, including children, drank it every day!

Fortunately, the beer brewed at the time was very light, more like a table beer, which some breweries in northern France continued to produce until the 1990s.

Meet a new generation of passionate brewers

In recent years, many enthusiasts have breathed new life into this tradition by setting up microbreweries. Today, the beers are stronger than they used to be, but still within the average range of French craft beers.

The brewers are delighted to welcome you to their breweries and share their passion with you. And of course, you can buy the beers brewed on site. From producer to customer, it doesn’t get more direct than that!

Our favourite spots

City centre

If you ask a Dunkirk local where to go for a drink, they’ll almost certainly point you towards “Rue de la Soif”, officially known as rue de l’Amiral Ronarc’h. No need to spell it out: you’ll find plenty of places to quench your thirst…

Just a stone’s throw away, pop in and see Betty at l’Apéro Bistrot, on rue Roger Salengro. Over a sharing platter, you can sample her speciality: grilled jambette, and above all her own take on vol-au-vent, made to her very own recipe.

Quai de la Citadelle

Prefer a dockside atmosphere? Head to quai de la Citadelle, a must-visit spot for rounding off your evening! You’re sure to find something to suit you at À l’Abordage, Aux Maboules, Quai 17, Sekhmet… And the beer selection is regularly refreshed!

Malo-les-Bains

In Malo-les-Bains, we love getting together at Jolly Roger, on avenue Kléber, for a 100% rock’n’roll atmosphere!

Along the beach, choose a table on the terrace or settle down on the sand. There are plenty of bars and restaurants waiting to welcome you!

And finally, as any good sailor in this land of brewers should, don’t leave without trying Dunkirk mussels, the perfect match for a good beer from the North and a generous portion of fries!
