Place Charles Valentin, 59140 Dunkerque
A mixture of red brick and stone, the Belfry is 75 metres high!
The belfry can only be visited on special days (European Heritage Days, National Architecture Days). You can enter the entrance hall to admire the stained glass window during town hall opening hours.

• The Town Hall, designed by Lille architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier, was built between 1897 and 1901 in the Flemish Renaissance style.

• On the main façade stands an equestrian statue of Louis XIV, who bought the town from the English in 1662.

• The interior base of the belfry is illuminated by a large stained glass window depicting the triumphant return of the Dunkirk privateer Jean Bart after his victory at the Battle of Texel in 1694.

• During the Dunkirk Carnival, the mayor and councillors throw 500kg of smoked herring onto the crowd of revellers from the balconies of the Town Hall!
