Based on the history of the Dunkirk port, the Musée Portuaire gives visitors a chance to discover the workings of a large port, the essential role of maritime exchanges, as well as the lives of the men and women who work on the quays and ships.
Whether you're interested in the battles of the famous naval commander Jean Bart, the adventures of fishing in Iceland, the history of shipyards, or the different jobs in a port, by the end of your visit all the secrets of the port will have been revealed.
Displayed in a former 19th century tobacco warehouse on the quai de la Citadelle, the Musée Portuaire's collections give visitors a fascinating insight into the world of a large port, from both a historical and contemporary perspective.
Opposite the museum, three ships are moored: the Duchesse Anne three-master, the Sandettie light vessel (both listed as historic monuments) and the Guilde barge all add to the quayside museum visit, offering visitors the chance to really immerse themselves in the lives of sailors and boatmen.
